Melroy Thompson

Melroy G. "Mel" Thompson, age 79 of Cannon Falls, died on Tuesday evening, March 18, 2014 at Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls.

Mel was born on July 31, 1934 in Zumbrota, the son of Arthur "Glen" and Mildred (Pearson) Thompson. He graduated from Wanamingo High School and served for eight years with the US Navy reserves. He returned to farm in Cannon Falls Township. He also worked at Armour's Meat Packing in South St. Paul for 23 years and later Peterson Turkey Farm.

He married Catherine (Schweich) in 1966 and was a member of Spring Garden Lutheran Church. He was also a member of Cannon Falls Lion's Club and the Ridge Riders Saddle Club. He loved horses and turned his passion for them into breeding horses. He was known as a hard working and highly respected farmer in Cannon Falls. Mel and Catherine also took pride in their family and the examples they set for their children and grandchildren alike. After a long days work farming he would spend time with family eating ice-cream and enjoy a big bowl of popcorn. He had an amazing smile and he loved to laugh. He will be remembered for his chuckle and kind-hearted spirit.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Catherine; children, Mark (Cathie) Freiermuth of Orville, WA, Kevin (Lynnell) Thompson of Cannon Falls, Edwin Freiermuth of Angle Inlet, MN, Deborah (Ed) Hall of Kellogg, Vicki Evenson of Hampton, Vonda (Joe) Brandl of Zimmerman, Eugene Freiermuth of Cannon Falls, Paula (Mike) Stoffel of Red Wing, Anne (Jeff) Harty of Cannon Falls and Chad (Phyllis) Thompson of Springfield, MA; 22 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; sisters, Glennis Gordon of Zumbrota and Virginia (Gene) Clark of Hastings; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral service was held on Tuesday, March 25 at 11:00 a.m., with visitation from 10-11 a.m., at Spring Garden Lutheran Church, Cannon Falls. Interment followed at the church cemetery. Visitation was on Monday from 5-8 p.m. at Lundberg Funeral Home, Cannon Falls.

Active pallbearers will be grandsons, Nathan Freiermuth, Keith Munson, Nick Hall, Chase Evenson, Hunter Brandl, Taylor Freiermuth, Michael Stoffel and Mason Harty.
