Marian L. Tilderquist, 90, retired elementary teacher, died Wednesday, March 20, 2013.
Marian was born to T. Lawrence and Selma (Johnson) Tilderquist in Vasa, MN on December 28, 1922. She grew up in the Vasa area and attended the rural country grade school, District 15. After graduation from the Cannon Falls High School, Marian attended Duluth State Teachers College, receiving certification for teaching elementary grades. She began teaching in Aitkin County, MN at the Palisade and Swatara Elementary Schools and then taught fourth grade at Aitkin Elementary School for many years. Marian later taught at the Hawthorne and North Star Schools until her retirement.
Marian's life was filled with a wide range of interests. She enjoyed chauffeuring and joining her sister Elsie in her many activities and committees with the blind. Together, they traveled to Australia and New Zealand, Hawaii, Alaska, Europe, several times to Sweden and also a ship cruise to Panama Canal and the Virgin Islands. She was a member of the American Swedish Institute and participated in on-going Swedish Language classes. Marian enjoyed art and belonged to a writing club. Marian also loved nature and being outdoors. She enjoyed picking berries and gardening, planting flowers and vegetables wherever she had a little space.
Marian's teaching was not limited to classrooms. She made use of every opportunity to provide new experiences and "hands on" learning to many young friends, whether it was baking and cooking or out in nature.
Marian was preceded in death by her parents, brother Conley, sisters Iva and Elsie and also a niece, Barbara Tilderquist. She is survived by seven nephews and nieces and close friend, Bunny Peterson.
Funeral service was Saturday, March 23, 2013 at Vasa Lutheran Church. Memorials may be directed to the Vasa Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Braille Evangelism Association. Casketbearers were Maurice, Bruce, Paul and Eric Tilderquist, Kyle Menke and Steve Hyllengren.
