by Mike Dalton

The Cannon Falls Bears staved off elimination Saturday, defeating the Waterville Indians 3-1 to earn a berth in the upcoming state amateur baseball tournament.

Waterville scored first, plating a single run in the top of the 3rd. The Bears quickly answered back, with Luke Winchell sailing a pitch over the leftfield fence for a home run. Keith Meyers, who had doubled, also scored on the blast.

Cannon added an insurance run in the 5th, when a sacrifice fly by Rich Burr scored Zeke Williams.

Southpaw Meyers again had a stellar day, striking out 15 in nine innings. He gave up four hits and one earned run.

Winchell was the offense star, going 3-4 with a home run and two RBI. Meyers, Brandon Voth and Taylor Pagel also had hits.

Cannon and Hampton had to play that same day for seeding positions, with the Cardinals winning 4-2.

Cory Hedeen went eight innings, striking out two and giving up 15 hits. Three of the four runs were earned.

Winchell had two hits, and Burr, Ryan Brintnall and Hedeen had one each. Winchell had a home run and Burr a double.

The state tournament will be held in Jordan and Belle Plaine starting Saturday, Aug. 16.
