VFW baseball splits four games

by Mike Dalton

The Cannon Falls VFW Post 4452 baseball team split four games last week.

Cannon started its four-game stretch by beating Kasson 3-0.

Tanner Carlson threw the shutout, striking out eight in seven innings. He gave up five hits.

Michael Monson had two hits, and Max Bowen had one. "Carlson and our defense got us out of many jams," coach Bucky Lindow said. "We played great defense and had excellent baserunning."

Monson tossed the team's second shutout in a row Saturday, in the first game of a doubleheader with Red Wing. The final score was 3-0.

Monson struck out seven and gave up four hits in seven innings. He pitched in-and-out of trouble the first three innings, then settled down, Lindow said.

Carlson and Hayden Strain each had two hits, and Jake Christenson, Carlton Lindow, Monson and Carter Reber had one hit each. Carlson had a double and Strain a triple.

Cannon struggled defensively in game two, committing six errors in an 11-3 loss.

Casey Welsch took the loss, going the first five innings. Christenson and Monson pitched in relief.

CF had five hits, one each from Carlson, Jason Traynor, Reber, Zeb Detweiler and Strain. All were singles.

Cannon ran into a hot-hitting Albert Lea team Sunday, and lost 10-0.

Traynor was stuck with the loss, and Michael Quinn also pitched. Lindow had two hits, and Traynor, Bowen and Reber had one each.

The squad was at Rochester Tuesday night. They are home against Austin on Sunday, and are at the Rockets on Monday and at Northfield on Wednesday, July 2.
