Cannon Falls High School track star Emi Trost capped off her stellar career by winning her second state title, in her second different event.
Trost was last year's 800m state champion, but a quad injury this season kept her from competing in that event, as well as the 1600m. She set her sights on the 3200m title, and despite running only five races this season, beat the runner-up by 10 seconds.
Trost ran a time of 10:56.30, well ahead of second place Hannah Truniger of Mayer Lutheran, who ran 11:06.53.
Truniger came out and set the pace early. "I didn't expect her to stay ahead of me as long as she did," Trost said. "I had to chase her, but that pushed me. I just wasn't sure if I would be able to kick strong enough to pass her."
Trost said she had to run a smart race, so as not to re-injure her quad muscle. "I was thinking of the future," she said; Trost will run at the University of Minnesota-Duluth in college.
That's also what kept her from defending her 800m title, as well as competing in the 1600m. "There's more speed in those events, so there's more muscle use. I put in more miles in training, and I really just did my best."
