Mada Hofstedt, senior at Cannon Falls High School, has signed to compete as a weightlifter at Northern Michigan University, Marquette, MI.
Mada competed and won at the Minnesota State competition in March. The head coach of the NMU team showed up at the event and then recruited Mada for his program.
Hofstedt had considered playing DIII volleyball at Bethany Lutheran in Mankato, but her CFHS coach, Scott Safe, said this was a great opportunity with a nice scholarship that she decided to go after. She is also involved in track and field.
Safe said the really nice thing about NMU is that it is also the home base for a U.S. Olympic Training Site with great facilities, coaches, nutrition programs, sports medicine and other athletes all at the school who are focused on weightlifting.
Safe, who started up the weightlifting team in the high school, is a former competitive lifter and has worked selling weightlifting equipment. Mada's dad, Josh, is also involved in the weightlifting equipment business as well as being football coach at CFHS.
Safe says Hofstedt is just a terrific kid, who is well deserving. "She's kind, nice, likable and not stand-offish," said Safe.
Safe thinks Mada is primed to really take off as she focuses on just one sport. "Genetically, she's a good fit for weightlifting and she's blessed to have never had an injury.
