The CFHS boys basketball team left everything they had on the court Saturday, but when the final buzzer sounded found themselves losing in Section 1AA seminfinals to the Byron Bears. The final score was 51-46.
After a back-and-forth contest, Cannon Falls found themselves down six with under two minutes to go. Jordan Lundell had a huge block on 6' 6" Evan Richardson, and Hunter Johnson followed with a 3-pointer. After a defensive stop, Alex Bultena drained another three to tie the game. Brock Peterson then drew a charge to give Cannon the ball.
The Bombers drew up a nice play to get an open 3-pointer, but the ball didn't drop. A foul on the inbounds play put Byron on the free throw line, where they made one of two. The Bombers rebounded the miss and called a time out - but unfortunately, they were out of time outs. The ensuing technical foul gave Byron two free throws and the ball, and they were able to hold on for the win.
"Unfortunately things didn't work out and we came up one play short," coach Josh Davisson said. "There were some great individual performances down the stretch that gave us a chance to win the game."
Bultena led with 13 points, Lundell had 11, Austin Noble eight, Peterson and Johnson five each, and Tanner and Taylor Carlson each had two. Bultena had eight rebounds, Noble and Lundell six each, and Johnson dished out seven assists.
CFHS finished the season with 20 wins, after starting out the season with a 1-5 record. "The game played out like our season; the guys played their hearts out and never quit," Davisson said. "After starting 1-5 they really dug in and came together as a team and ended the season on a 19-5 run. I'm very proud of this group of young men; they really sacrificed a lot of individual objectives in order to put the team first."
