Rocket boys #5 sub-section seed

by Mike Dalton

The Randolph Rockets picked up a couple of wins early on last week as they beat two teams that they beat earlier in the season, LeRoy-Ostrander and Medford.

The game in LeRoy saw the Rockets down 10 early but with calm heads they battled back. Randolph had three players in double digit scoring: Kyle Volkert with 11, Austin Moorhouse with 16 and Drew Weidner with 19. Randolph won the game 74-63.

"We always score well when we play together on offense," noted head coach Tony Linbo. David Speight had six, Andrew Emery eight, Luke Dubbels two, Drake Speight four, Eric Otte five, and Hunter Ehlers three.

The next night the Rockets took on rival Medford in a rematch of a hard-fought game earlier in the season.

The Rockets built up a big lead but Medford cut it to six in the second half, but that was all the closer they would get as the Rockets pulled away in the second half, going 10-13 from the charity stripe and winning 52-29. "We work a lot on free-throws, trying different ways to put pressure on the guys in practice to make them feel game like pressure," said Linbo.

Weidner had seven, Drake Speight two, Otte 17, Moorhouse nine, and Volkert 17.

The Rockets finished up the week hosting WEM for Senior night at the Launch Pad. Randolph honored Gino Espinoza, Andrew Emery, and Austin Moorhouse for their dedication and hard work that they have given to the Randolph Basketball program.

The game was tightly matched and tightly fought. The Rockets were physical on defense and aggressive on offense. The difference in the game was WEM hit 14 three-pointers and the Rockets hit only six. "They shot the lights out. And it wasn't just one player," Linbo said. The Rockets cut the lead to four points twice in the second half but could not get any closer because WEM would come back and knock down the shot. The Rockets lost 84-66.

"The game was a lot closer than the scoreboard suggests. We played tough against WEM and if we play like that in the play-offs we'll beat teams," said Linbo. David Speight had two, Emery five, Weidner 10, Drake Speight two, Espinoza two, Otte 10, Moorhouse 11, Ehlers two, and Volkert 22.

The Rockets drew the #5 sub-section seed, and start playoffs at #4 Southland on Thursday, Feb. 20, at 7 p.m. The winner faces either #1 Goodhue, #8 Lyle-Pacelli or #9 LeRoy-Ostrander on Monday, Feb. 24, at 6 p.m. at the Mayo Civic Auditorium. The sub-section final is Saturday, March 1 at 2 p.m. at the Auditorium.
