The CFHS tennis team season came to an end Tuesday, Oct. 8, with a 5-2 loss to Waseca in the section semifinals.
Cannon had a tough day in singles play, with McKenna Bauer picking up the lone win at #4. Maddie Adel at #2 lost in three sets, and Tayler Banitt at #1 and Sheyenne Bauer at #3 lost in two sets.
Molly Rolfes and Bethany Nelson at #3 doubles won in two sets. Doubles teams Hannah Boman and Kaesey Glaess, and Grace Rutter and Sarah Modrak lost in two sets.
"A tough match - over three hours," coach Paul Norstad said. "I thought we had some chances, but couldn't pull out the matches we needed to to pull off the upset.
"McKenna picked up a nice singles win. I knew we were going to have to win at either #2 doubles or #3 singles if we wanted to win, but we just couldn't pull through. Grace and Sarah had a clost first set, and Maddie lost a tough one at #2 singles.
"I thought we played with them and it could have easily been a 4-3 win for us, but Waseca was just the better team." Waseca lost 4-3 to Lourdes in the section final.
Individual sections started Friday. Banitt and Adel, playing doubles, were the #3 seed, and won their first match 6-1, 6-0, then beat the #6 seed from Lourdes 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. They lost their opening match Tuesday, and then lost a second match to end their season just short of the state tournament.
Boman and Glaess won their first match, then lost to the #1 seed from Lourdes, 6-0, 7-6 (8-6). They were down 3-0 in the second set, then rallied to go ahead 6-5 before falling in a tie-breaker.
Sheyenne Bauer had a tough seed in singles. She beat a player from St. Croix Lutheran, then lost to #1 seed Sofia Terzic from Lourdes.
Sarah Modrak beat a player from New Life Academy in her first round match, then lost to #2 seed Maddie Muotka of Waseca in her second round match.
