The CFHS football team ran into a tough Stewartville Tiger team Friday night, losing 41-25 in the school's annual Homecoming game.
Stewartville opened the scoring a few minutes into the game, but the Bombers answered back at the end of the 1st quarter when Hunter Johnson hit Jordan Lundell on a 14-yard scoring play. The extra point was no good, and the score was 7-6.
After the Tigers scored at the 7:42 mark, Johnson and Lundell again connected, this time from 44 yards out. The 2-point conversion failed, and the score was 14-12.
Four minutes after that, Stewartville struck again, making the extra point to go ahead 21-12. Johnson and the Bombers countered late in the half, on a 23-yard scoring pass to Bailey Mills. The extra point kick was good, and the halftime score was 21-19.
Stewartville opened the game up in the second half, scoring three times to Cannon's one. The Bombers' score came on yet another Johnson-to-Lundell scoring play, this time from 7-yards out.
Cannon amassed more than 300 yards of total offense, but had no answer for an efficient Tiger offense. Johnson completed 17 of 32 passes for 276 yards and four touchdowns, with Lundell leading the way with seven catches for 140 yards and three touchdowns. Brock Peterson caught six for 94 yards, Mills four for 42 yards and a TD, and Tanner Carlson one for eight yards.
Clay Broze was the leading rusher, carrying five times for 26 yards. Johnson rushed 11 times for 23 yards.
Sterling Carlson led with 14 tackles, Nate Melhouse had 11, Johnson 10, Taylor Carlson and Garrett Beach eight each, and Austin Noble seven.
"We came up short again, but it wasn't for lack of effort," commented coach Josh Hofstedt. "We made a lot of big plays."
Cannon is at Rochester Lourdes Wednesday night, in the final regular season game of the year. Start time is 7 p.m. Section 1AAA playoffs start Tuesday, Oct. 22.
