A football team can't turn the ball over seven times and expect to win. The Cannon Falls Bombers learned that the hard way Friday night.
Byron beat Cannon Falls 27-15, capitalizing on five interceptions and two fumble recoveries.
"Turnovers killed us; it's hard to win when you turn the ball over seven times," coach Josh Hofstedt said.
Byron scored the first two touchdowns before Hunter Johnson connected with Bailey Mills on a 5-yard scoring pass. Derek Johnson kicked the extra point.
The Bears scored midway through the 3rd quarter on a 67-yard pass play, but Johnson had a nifty run of his own in the 4th, scoring from 36 yards out. Alex Bultena hit Mills with the 2-point conversion.
Johnson completed 11 of 27 passes for 149 yards and a touchdown. Garrett Beach caught four passes for 33 yards, Bultena three for 85 yards, Mill three for 26 yards and a score, Brock Peterson one for 15 yards and Jordan Lundell one for two yards.
Johnson was the leading rusher, gaining 120 yards on 22 carries.
Sterling Carlson had eight tackles and a sack, Peterson eight tackles, Ryan Castillo five tackles, Taylor Carlson five tackles, Nate Melhouse four tackles and a blocked punt, Jason Hemmah three tackles and a sack, and Bultena two tackles and an interception.
The 1-1 Bombers make the long haul to LaCrescent Friday night. Game time is 7 p.m.
