Tennis wins first match, first tournament

by Mike Dalton

The CFHS tennis team has started its 2013 season off in a strong way, beating Park of Cottage Grove 6-1 Tuesday and winning the Farmington tournament Friday.

Tayler Banitt, McKenna Bauer and Molly Rolfes won singles matches against Park, while Maddie Adel/Kaesey Glaess, Hannah Boman/Sheyenne Bauer, and Sarah Modrak/Bethany Nelson all won doubles matches. Grace Rutter at #3 singles suffered the only loss, but that took a tiebreaker.

"We'd never seen Park before so didn't know what to expect," coach Paul Norstad said. "It was a good first match. Molly and Bethany picked up their first-ever varsity wins."

Banitt and Adel took home first place honors Friday in singles play, and Modrak/Rutter, and Lauren Lecy/Taylor Jackson took first in doubles play. Rolfes was second in singles play, and Glaess/Sheyenne Bauer, and Nelson/Delanie Otto were second in doubles. McKenna Bauer competed but did not place.

"An interesting day," mused Norstad. "We didn't play our best, which was frustrating, but we were able to pull out some close sets. We really struggled at some spots, which was a surprise. Maddie had the best day, picking up three good wins, and Modrak/Rutter had a tough first set but did a nice job of pulling out a win.

"We have been practicing well and in matches against each other, so we just need to transfer that to our matches and we'll be fine. We are a pretty talented team."

A match Monday at Northfield was postponed because of the heat. The Bombers are at Woodbury Wednesday and Lourdes Tuesday, before coming home to host Cotter on Thursday, Sept. 5.
