Soccer gears up for first-ever season

by Ken Haggerty

Cannon Falls High School and Middle School are gearing up for the first ever official soccer season.

A boys club team has played some exhibition games the last few years, but the School Board approved a plan for a school sanctioned team for boys and girls starting this fall.

Boys' first game is Thursday, August 22 versus Byron at St. Paul's Lutheran Church Fields. Girls first game is Saturday, August 24 versus Cotter in Winona. Coaches are hoping for about a six-game schedule for the first year.

If numbers support it, the school is ready to field varsity, junior varsity and junior high teams for boys and girls. A full team is eleven on the field. Coaches say 15 players would be a nice roster size.

Sign-up for all Cannon Falls Fall sports is Monday, August 5 with paperwork starting at 5:30 p.m. and the meeting to follow at 6:00 p.m.

All Fall sports practices start Monday, August 12.

Head coaches are Adam Rueger for boys and Anne Davisson for girls. Activities Director Jake Winchell says plans are for fields to be available at St. Paul's and behind the Elementary School. Junior varsity coach for boys is Matt Fimmen. Boys junior high coach is Scott Wildenberg.

A garage sale to support the soccer program is scheduled for Saturday, July 27 from 7 a.m. to noon at 206 Ridgecrest Drive.
