Frustrating loss for RHS baseball

by Mike Dalton

The RHS baseball team suffered a frustrating loss to Janesville Monday, squandering a lead and losing 10-9.

After falling behind, Randolph led 7-3 after three innings. Janesville scored runs in four of the next five innings, including two in the 7th to win.

"We controlled and led most of the game, until the 7th," Rocket coach Chris Stanton said. "We made some critical errors that gave JWP the opportunity to win."

Cody Pirkl started and sent 5.1 innings. He settled down after giving up three in the 1st, and struck out six. Trevor Otte was saddled with the loss in relief.

Ryan Hoey was 2-4 with three RBI, Sam Aune 2-3 with two RBI, Jake Hines 1-3 with two RBI, Nick Bergstrom had two RBI, and Pirkl and Collin Splichal had one hit each.

Nathan Overby, in his first varsity start, pitched well enough to win Tuesday, April 30, in a 5-1 loss to Goodhue.

"He did a nice job of mixing up his pitches, throwing strikes and making plays on the mound," Stanton said.

Pirkl and Tyler Weed each had two hits, and accounted for all of the Rocket offense.

The Rockets were at New Richland Tuesday. They host Medford Thursday, then are at Faribault BA Friday, Waterville Monday and Medford on Tuesday, May 14.
