1/13/2013 1:54:00 PM RHS takes title at Grand Meadow
by Mike Dalton
The RHS boys basketball team went to Grand Meadow for a holiday tournament in late December, and came home with the tournament title.
Randolph first faced LeRoy-Ostrander, and a confident Rocket squad won 69-51.
RHS had already beaten LeRoy once this season, and that helped in this game. "We played confidently and stuck to the plan we used against them the first time, which was to wear them down," coach Tony Linbo said. The Rockets were able to rotate quite a few players to maintain full-court pressure, and that force LO into multiple turnovers. "When you work hard on defense good things tend to happen on the other end," said Linbo.
Ryan Hoey had eight points, Jake Dubbels 18, Drew Weidner five, Luke Dubbels two, Eric Otte seven, Austin Moorhouse 10, Chris Feidt 15 and Kyle Volkert four.
That win sent RHS to the championship game against host Grand Meadow, and the Rockets were able to withstand a late rally to win 59-50.
Randolph led most of the way, but Grand Meadow was able to go ahead by five late in the second half. Stern defense and clutch free throw shooting by senior Alex McKay and sophomore Weidner sealed the win.
"Credit all of our team for staying together when things were going our way," Linbo said. "We accomplished our goal by winning this tourament."
Hoey had two points, Jake Dubbels 13, McKay 11, Weidner eight, Trevor Otte four, Eric Otte three, Moorhouse seven, Feidt seven and Volkert four.
Randolph picked up a pre-Christmas win on Dec. 21, beating Alden-Conger 62-46. Hoey had two points, Dubbels 10, McKay five, Keagan Nitz two, Weidner eight, Trevor Otte six, Eric Otte two, Moorhouse seven and Feidt 20.
On Dec. 18 the Rockets lost to state-ranked Faribault BA 75-52.
"We didn't play well at all," Linbo said. "It was a measure of how much work we have to do to win consistently."
Hoey had eight points, Dubbelss 16, McKay three, Weidner six, Trevor Otte four, Moorhouse eight, Feidt five and Volkert two.
The Rockets are at Glenville-Emmons Thursday, and they host NRHEG on Friday before going to Medford on Tuesday, Jan. 15.
