#1 Lourdes too much for Bombers

by Mike Dalton

Junior Jordan Lundell electrified the Homecoming crowd Friday night with a 89-yard punt return, but it wasn't enough to propel the Cannon Falls Bombers past #1 ranked Rochester Lourdes. The final score was Lourdes 46, Bombers 27.

Derek Johnson's extra point gave Cannon a 7-0 lead in the 1st quarter, but it didn't take Lourdes long to strike back. Their good quarterback, senior Mark Pagel, scored the first of his four touchdowns less than two minutes later, and Lourdes scored again with 1:19 left in the quarter.

Junior quarterback Hunter Johnson and senior Austin Lauridsen hooked up on a 12-yard scoring pass at the 9:20 mark, and with Derek Johnson's second extra point, the Bombers led 14-12.

Two minutes later Lourdes struck again, with junior McKay Carstens scoring his second touchdown of the night. This time Lourdes' extra point was good, and the score was 19-14.

Bomber senior Ian Althoff scored from a yard out with about four minutes remaining in the half, but Lourdes' Pagel answered 15 seconds later with a 65-yard scoring run. Exactly three minutes after that score he crossed the goal line again, and Rochester led 33-20 at the break.

Pagel scored to open the 2nd half, but Johnson threw for his second TD pass of the night at the 4:19 mark of the 3rd quarter, hitting Alex Bultena from 6-yards out. Kane Carstens of Lourdes rounded out the scoring with a 57-yard run late in the 3rd.

"Our boys played their butts off; I'm very proud of them," said Bomber coach Josh Hofstedt. "We did a lot of things very well, and will get better at the things we can. Lourdes showed why they're the #1 team in the state."

Johnson passed for 161 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Bultena caught four passes for 32 yards, Colton Sande three for 66, Lundell three for 32 and Lauridsen two for 31.

Johnson was the leading rusher, gaining 67 yards on 12 carries. Althoff had 33 yards on 14 carries and Bultena 22 yards on one carry.

Clay Broze led the defense with 10 tackles. Brock Peterson and Andrew Anderson had nine tackles each, Taylor Carlson had eight and Austin Noble five with a sack.

The 3-3 Bombers are at Stewartville Friday. They finish the regular season at home against Pine Island on Wednesday, Oct. 17.
