The CFHS football team again found themselves down early, and they failed to dig themselves out of a 16-point deficit in a 22-14 loss to the Byron Bears.
Byron scored first, on a 22-yard field goal at the 8:15 mark of the 1st quarter. A punt return for a touchdown midway through the 1st quarter followed by a 50-yard scoring pass with 1:33 left in the opening stanza gave Byron its 16 early points.
Bomber quarterback Hunter Johnson hit Noah Callister from a yard out with 1:26 remaining in the half to cut the lead to 16-7. Byron's Andrew Root made his second and third field goals of the night in the 3rd quarter, extending the Bears' lead to 22-7 before Johnson scored on a 5-yard run with just under four minutes remaining in the game.
"After we spotted Byron those 16 points, our guys played very hard to the end," coach Josh Hofstedt said. "We drove down the field on our last possession with a chance to tie the game, and it was a very exciting ending."
Junior Hunter Johnson was 10 of 15 passing for 177 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. Jordan Lundell caught five passes for 103 yards, Alex Bultena three for 30, Austin Lauridsen one for 42, and Callister one for one yard and a touchdown.
Ian Althoff again led Bomber rushers with 101 yards on 24 carries. Johnson had seven carries for 22 yards, and Ryan Castillo had two for 10 yards.
Defensively, Althoff had six tackles, Andrew Anderson six tackles and one force fumble, Castillo three tackles, three sacks, a blocked punt and a blocked extra point, Taylor Carlson six tackles and a sack, Jason Hemmah two tackles and two sacks, Bultena one tackle and two interceptions, and Johnson seven tackles.
The 3-2 Bombers host state-ranked Rochester Lourdes this Friday at 7 p.m., in the school's annual Homecoming game.
