The Cannon Falls School Board passed the official resolution on January 14, 2013 directing the administration to make recommendations for reductions in programs and positions and reasons therefor. This means it is time for the administration and department reps to sit down and discuss all areas of our school system. We are projecting $400,000 of necessary reductions in the budget in order to balance. This does not always mean laying off countless numbers of staff members or cutting programs.
All Day Every Day Kindergarten is a great example of this; we are hearing from the legislature several possible funding formulas for All Day Every Day Kindergarten. The exact formula is not final yet, but we will need to look at this opportunity as will every school across the State of Minnesota. If we do not take advantage of certain opportunities as they present themselves, our school system, will start to fall behind and others will grow and advance by leaps and bounds. When it makes sense to invest because the return on that investment is substantial, we have to find the money somewhere or we will be losing kids to neighboring districts.
We will continue to be fiscally responsible for the Cannon Falls Community as we go through our needs, mandates and opportunities for educational growth.
I welcome all ideas for budget reductions, grant opportunities and possible revenue suggestions. Please send those thoughts to: email@example.com.
