Explains situation

To the editor:

I'd rather not write this letter, but to understand what happened on November 7 you have to understand what led up to it.

For a year now I've watched Babe O'Gorman - a man who works in construction like I do, who's old enough to be my father, a man I'd otherwise usually respect - behave really badly towards my wife Cedar. Three days after her appointment to the Cannon Falls city council, he called and suggested she drive out to his house that weekend, by herself. I couldn't wrap my head around that, so I have paid close attention since then as he's grown more aggressive. She came home shaken up after a meeting where Babe shouted and swore at her while calling her "honey" over and over.

That's not abuse, I would never call it that. But it's bullying, and Cedar's not his only target. I get that he wants to feel important in the city, and I agree that people in public office should be accountable. My only objection is the way he does it - with lies and intimidation. I was taught to treat people better than that.

I've considered calling him or writing a letter, but Cedar always calmed me down, saying she could handle it and it wasn't worth engaging with someone so unhappy and unreasonable.

On Nov. 7 I thought Babe might already be gone south. Instead he's at the podium outright lying about my wife. Again. I admit it, I got angry. I decided right then I couldn't just sit by. I've told the story to CFPD and the paper, and the story doesn't change: I called a bully out on his bad behavior. I'm not sorry.

I'd really like to put all this behind us, but unfortunately it seems like he can't let that happen. I hear he's seeking revenge by trying to publicize my ancient history - before I moved to Minnesota or had ever met my wife. How is that relevant to anything? From what I understand, I'd think Babe could empathize with wanting to leave the past behind.
