Lord's name in vain

To the editor:

A message I heard recently on TV was titled "I am saved, then what?" The speaker explained that a new Christian needs mentoring on how to live a Christian life.

There is a responsibility of living a Christian life: to have good conversation, conduct and character. Our life is to be an expression of the life of Jesus Christ. What message are we sending each day to our friends and family?

As I dwelt on this message, a thought occurred to me: why do Christians take God's name in vain? I'm wondering if no one has ever explained to them that using God's name in vain is hurtful to other Christians, as it shows disrespect to the God we love. It is not only hurtful to us, but hurtful to them also, as God says He will hold them guilty who use His name in vain.

Psalm 139:20 says the enemies take the Lord's name in vain. I feel our Christian friends, if this is brought to their attention, would not want to displease God this way, as this does not show the love, respect and honor we should have for God.

We are to be a beacon of light for Him, praising His name, not defaming it. We Christians are all sinners, saved by grace. We are far from perfect. God wants us to love Him with our whole heart, soul, mind and strength, which I know I fall so short of. Christian friends, let's all try to show God the honor and respect He deserves.

Here's part of a poem I have:

The tongue is such a little thing,

But won't you let it be

Controlled by love and by the Lord

To give us victory.
