Driven to poetry

To the Editor:

As the people in Cannon Falls struggle through the water wars, remain indifferent to problems in certain city departments and are fine with the city council letting through foolish proposals (ending as referendums), Europe has got a problem.

Events across the pond are driving individuals to extremes, even to poetry.

We have the deep impression

Which cannot be ignored,

That all's not well in Asia

And my Crimea's just been gored.

It was in 1938

That the Germans started,

And soon after,

Czech and Slovakia parted.

Some folks can't stand gluten,

It blocks their digestion.

Europe can't stomach Putin,

On that, there's no question.

Deny us this day

Our daily rage,

Lead us to People's pictures

And past the Op-Ed page.

Sixty years ago George F. Kennan commented on the importance of foreign policy. He wrote: "By this I mean that a political society does not live to conduct foreign policy; it would be more correct to say that it conducts foreign policy in order to live."

Respectfully,

Phillip Hammes
