I am told back in the late 1960s, a group called the Jaycees had an idea. The city needed a new pool and this group of community-minded citizens had a passion! That passion was teaching our children how to swim. You see while pools are a great place for kids and adults of all ages to spend a great day outside, they are first and foremost an educational opportunity. The Jaycees knew that with all of the water around Cannon Falls, they had an obligation to teach kids (and possibly adults) how to swim. So they took it among themselves to raise the money and built the pool, and then gave it to the city in 1969. We have that same obligation, and our pool is in jeopardy of closing if we do not act.
My family has been in Cannon Falls for 10 years now and I have seen many projects come and go. It seems that it all starts with an idea, a plan is developed, it is released to the public and then the negativity starts. There are a few letters to the editor, most of which contain inaccurate assumptions, misinformation and ideas of how to make the project better and cheaper (most of which have already been researched).
I remember a huge buzz over Invenergy. If all you read were the letters to the editor, you would have thought the whole town was going to explode or die of the toxic gases. Well now my guess is you wish we had 2 more of them in town.
We built a Million dollar library. We raised $10 Million dollars to build a new hospital. A $30 Million dollar hospital! We built a new school addition. Think of the Millions that have been invested in this town. It has been worth EVERY DIME and each issue was hotly contested, ridiculed and slandered. Let's stop the fight and continue what we have started, improving our town.
I would have just one request of you. If you plan to vote, please be an educated voter!!!
