Silence

To the editor:

On a winter's evening a person standing in front of Nick's Downtown Diner can hear a squirrel sigh in Riverside Park. That means it is quiet in Cannon Falls and that is not bad. Silence has been called "golden" and it certainly is, in the summer. In July motorcycles and pickups backfire and bark. Radios scream. Angels on low flying clouds call downstairs to get sinners' attention. It makes each street a chaotic environment for all, except the clinically deaf.

A world without sound would be sad, but no one likes to feel he or she is living in a bass drum.

The silence of the city council members at the meeting to vote on our new city administrator was not golden. Some citizens would have liked to hear the new man's priorities. I know he whispered them to council members in a private meeting but that isn't enough. Does the phrase "abdication of responsibility" echo in the mind? The Mayor told the new man to hit the ground "running" and I would like to know which direction he has chosen.

Respectfully,

Phillip Hammes
