In response to Beacon opinion columnist Paul Martin's (and Red Wing Eagle writer Steve Murphy) recent letter claiming that the Republicans voted to cut $40 million from the food stamp program and the implication that Republicans are voting against the will of God, we would like to first ask the writer to identify the bill, the year and exactly when and how this vote took place? We don't believe that it ever happened.
Typically Democrats will make this claim based on the baseline budget process to score political points with the electorate. If Democrats propose a 20% increase in spending and the Republicans vote for a 15% increase, Democrats will call this a 5% "cut" in spending when in reality it is a 15% increase. It has been a favorite tactic of the progressives for decades.
Further Mr. Martin claims that the GOP is going against the will of God citing Luke 16: 19-31. This passage talks about a rich man who ignores the needs of a poor man. We don't believe there is any instance in the Bible that promotes giving money to any government body to redistribute to those who may be in need. We believe that God wants us as individuals to help those in need with our time and money. God holds us as individuals accountable, as he does in Luke 16, and expects us to do what is needed, not farm it out to a government bureaucracy.
Instead we offer Proverbs 31: 10-31, the virtuous woman. In this parable the hard working woman works and produces extra food and clothing, some of which she uses to help the poor.
We would caution your wife and your church against preaching or promoting any candidate or party, since it is illegal to do so as a tax exempt entity.
We pray that you and other writers will tell the whole true story and not be like the great deceiver.
