I am writing this letter because of my concern about the Veterans Memorial going up in Cannon Falls. From the information I have received not all veterans from this community will have their name on this monument. Only vets or their family/friends willing to pay for a plaque will be honored and the size of the plaque will be determined by the amount of money donated.
This does not make sense to me. A veterans memorial should not be erected unless it honors all vets regardless of ability to pay. All vets served this country and all vets should be honored. All names should be the same size because all those who served were willing to sacrifice their life for their country. To suggest that the honor accorded to veterans is proportional to the amount of money they and their survivors and relatives can produce for a memorial is appalling.
No memorial at all would be preferable to honoring some but not all veterans of this community depending on their ability to pay. Isn't it just possible that some simply can't afford it?
