8/7/2014 2:54:00 PM CF school board talks advertising

Advertising as a means to increase district revenues was one item discussed by the Cannon Falls School Board at its July 28 meeting.
Superintendent Beth Giese felt it would be good policy to have a list of all the advertising going on within the buildings-sort of a counter to the fundraising list that needs to be submitted once a year to the board. Community Education Director Jake Winchell noted that it might be harder to track advertising that comes on activity programs since the Cannon Falls Beacon procures that and then prints the programs for free. Giese said current revenues from advertising were merely between $3-4,000 so it "isn't a big deal."
Giese gave an update on the Wastedo building and site; thanking board member Rob Siebenaler for putting her in contact with a realtor specializing in that type of property. She explained that of the 9.2 acres, only 7.2 are tillable. It is a bit too far from the new overpass to be "really good commercial property." She said there was one tank underground that needed to be removed and the roof was warping and needed to come down. She hoped the boiler would last through the winter. She said she was in negotiations with a buyer for $16,600 per acre with the promise to remove the tank himself.
In other business, Matthew Juncker (coming from the Pine Island School District) was hired as the HS Business Teacher for 2014-15 for $43,340; Donna Anderson retired as a District Special Education Assistant; Barb Simon resigned as a Cannon Kids instructor; the board approved the resignation of the District Technology Director (un-named but going to the Austin School District) and the posting and hiring of their replacement; Hastings Coop received the milk bid for $55,815.17 (Dean Foods the only other bidder at $58,537.80); and Sara Lee the bread bid for $12,006.55 (Pan-o-Gold the only other bid at $12,863.34); the dance team was allowed to switch fundraisers from calendar sales to a "kick-a-thon"; and by unanimous, roll-call vote, the board allowed ISD #813 (Lake City Public) to join the Goodhue County Education District #6051.
The next board meeting will be Monday, Aug. 25 at 6 p.m. at the High School Boardroom. Agenda items include: Custodian's Contract, date for Truth-in-Taxation hearing, Hiring an Elementary Classroom Music Teacher, and a presentation on how teachers are using technology in the classroom.
