Cannon hires Lake City administrator

by Ken Haggerty

The Cannon Falls city council unanimously approved the hiring of Ron Johnson as new city administrator at the February 6, 2014 council meeting with no discussion on the vote.

The council members held an informal meet and greet with Johnson before the meeting and had a chance to review his resume and letter of application prior to the meeting.

He is expected to start in Cannon Falls March 10. He is currently city administrator at Lake City, where he has been employed since 2005. He was at Zumbrota from 1989 to 2005. He was at Ada from 1985 to 1989.

Johnson is a graduate of Moorhead State University with a major in Finance and Minor in Management.

The Red Wing resident contract matches his current package with a base salary of $103,800. The entire compensation package is a little less than the previous administrator, Aaron Reeves, who took a city management job in Rochester.

Johnson called the Cannon Falls job an "exciting new opportunity in public administration in a growing community."

The search committee had Johnson as their top recommendation to the council. They liked his experience and familiarity with Goodhue County and the MnDOT District office in Rochester.

Mayor Robby Robinson told Johnson to put on his track shoes as he would need to hit the job running with all of the ongoing projects in Cannon Falls.

Overdue bills, FD donation

The Council also certified the quarterly list of overdue sewer and water bills to be turned over to the County to be collected with property tax assessments. There were 53 accounts overdue. Total amount overdue is $16,655. Only one account is in four figures, at $1,049 and only two others are over $750,

The Council approved the donation of extrication equipment by the Fire department to the Randolph-Hampton Fire District. Cannon Falls has new equipment purchased through a FEMA grant.

Meeting at Fair

The Council accepted an invitation to hold its first meeting in July at the Cannon Valley Fairgrounds on July 1.
