The Cannon Falls speech team headed south for their annual overnight trip to the Fairmont Cardinal Invitational, placing third as a team behind Class AA powerhouse Marshall and in the middle of some of the top Class A teams in Minnesota: second place Fairmont, fourth place St. Peter and fifth place Mankato Loyola.
Award winners in several categories included previous 2013 MSHSL state finalists. Matt Lockett was event champion in Poetry with last season's state runner up from New Ulm Cathedral coming in third. In Extemp Speaking (ES), three of the top four place winners were previous state finalists. Last year's fifth place winner in ES from Loyola earned the win with state finalists Sydney Erhardt placing second and Josh Siebenaler coming in fourth. Fellow ES teammate Miranda Felton placed in between with a third place finish. Finally, Peter Hoffman finished second in Creative Expression behind last year's state champion from Fairmont.
Additional CF speechies that turned in strong a performance in tough competition were MaryAnn McCusker (Honorable Mention) in Creative Expression; Bjorn Pearson (HM) in Discussion; Mary Franz (5th) in Drama; Emma Thomley (7th) in Extemp Reading; Matt Breuer (4th) in Great Speeches; Lily French (HM) in Humorous; Brandon Stiles (6th) in Poetry; and Samantha Hamann (6th) in Storytelling.
Halfway through the invitational season, the Cannon Falls speech team is motivated to work hard to build on this weekend's accomplishments. This week, the team competes at the Loyola junior high tournament on Thursday and the whole team travels to Owatonna on Saturday.
