Cannon Falls High School has named juniors Sydney Erhardt and Matt Lockett as its representatives to the Minnesota State High School League's Excellence in Community, Education and Leadership ExCEL) award program.
ExCEL is a unique recognition program designed exclusively for Minnesota high school juniors who are active in school activities, who show Leadership qualities, and who volunteer in their communities.
Every member school of the League is invited to nominate one girl and one boy for the ExCEL Award.
Erhardt is defending State Champion in Extemporaneous Speaking, was a "Best in Site" award winner for her alto saxophone performance at a regional contest last year, and has been a top performer at the highest levels in State Debate. She is a captain for the second year in Speech.
Academically, Erhardt has a 4.187 GPA while taking a rigorous course load that includes AP History, AP Comp, Honors Humanities, Spanish III and Pre-Calculus.
Erhardt volunteers at Children's Hospital in St. Paul, giving tours to new families and just sitting and visiting with kids with epilepsy and in the pediatric intensive care unit.
She is also a leader in the National Honor Society. She is the daughter of Steve and Lisa Erhardt. Her younger sister, Katie, is a freshman. A grandfather, Dennis Wilcox, also lives in Cannon Falls.
Lockett has been a finalist at State Speech in Poetry and Prose the past two years and is a two-year captain for the CFHS team.
Lockett has been named to the Minnesota All-State Choir and multiple other honor choirs. He has earned Superior ratings at all but one regional vocal contest since 9th grade.
A stand-out in Drama, he has been very active in school plays, holding a lead role every year since 7th grade. This past summer he participated in community theater in Northfield.
He was a State contest qualifier in BPA and maintains a 3.68 GPA taking AP Comp, Spanish III and Pre-Calc.
He was a volunteer on a Youth Church Group Trip to New Orleans this past summer with his Spring Garden Lutheran Church.
Lockett is also active in Interact and SADD. He is the son of Marge and James Krager. His grandmother, Edith Kelly lives in Cannon Falls.
Erhardt is "one of the most intellectual people I know," said Lockett, but says she also has "so much charisma and lights up a room whenever she enters. She takes whatever she does seriously."
Lockett "knows how to set his own personal priorities for what he wants to do and that makes him extremely successful in what he chooses to take on," said Erhardt. She calls him a great teammate and classmate.
