11/27/2013 9:20:00 AM CF Speech returns strong team
At the 2013 state speech tournament, the Cannon Falls speech team had its strongest showing ever with 17 qualifiers and seven medalists, including one state champion. The team members are excited to return for the upcoming 2014 season. Speakers are presently confirming categories and starting initial research into topics and pieces.
Leading the team are the four returning captains and medalists from last season. After earning an 8th place medal in Prose, junior Matt Lockett is moving back to Poetry, an event that he earned a 5th place medal for as a freshmen. Junior Hannah Brummund is hoping to improve upon her 6th place state finals finish in Storytelling this year. Working to push each other again into the top spots in Extemporaneous Speaking are senior Josh Siebenaler who placed 7th, and teammate junior Sydney Erhardt who was state champion last year. In team history, all eight CF state speech champions were seniors, so Sydney is the first CF speaker to try to defend a state title.
Only two speakers from Cannon Falls have earned a third medal at the state speech tournament: Marguerite Haggerty in 2011 and Stacy (Anderson) Severson in 1999. A rare honor, as just over 200 students have accomplished this since 1969. This year, both Sydney Erhardt and Matt Lockett each have the opportunity to earn the coveted third award at state.
Five additional CF state qualifiers are going for a repeat trip to the state tournament and possibly break into the medal round: senior Megan Bauer in Informative, junior Mary Franz in Drama, sophomores Matt Breuer and Matt Moskal in Great Speeches, plus sophomore Bjorn Pearson, who is moving to Discussion from Extemporaneous Speaking. Altogether, three dozen veteran team members will be competing this year for Cannon Falls. Team expectations are high for a fun and successful season
The team and coaches Holly Winget, Cal Vande Hoef and John Fogarty invite new members to join speech at the The Call Out Meeting on Thursday, December 5 after school. The practice schedule for speech is based on individual sessions with coaches and captains, so it is extremely flexible. Students who compete in winter and spring athletic and academic activities are able to also be on the speech team. Feel free to contact Vande Hoef at the high school for any additional information on how to join speech.
