Paul Hernke, son of Joe and Nicolette Hernke of Cannon Falls, is a cheerleader at North Dakota State University (NDSU).
In football, track and weightlifting at Cannon Falls Schools, he had learned some gymnastics moves when he and his dad "horsed around."
Hernke explained that while playing sand volleyball one day some girls invited the guys to work out with them. One of his friends suggested he perform a backflip and then a few other moves and the girls liked what they saw.
"A couple of weeks later they called me and said they needed another guy so that was how I got on the team," he said.
Now in his second year at NDSU, this talented Construction Management major on the cheerleading team of 10 girls and 10 guys has had the opportunity to travel to away games including this year going to State and Southern Illinois with more to come.
Only four girls and four guys are sent to away games so it was a particular honor for Paul to be able to go to football Nationals last year in Texas. "We flew down and got to see some things and then on the third day down there NDSU took the title for a second year in a row."
Enthusiastically Hernke stated, "It's lots of fun - I'm enjoying it."
