The Cannon Falls Community Education preschool program opened the Fall at full capacity with 89 students enrolled and two students on a waiting list, reports Community Education director Jake Winchell.
"We consider all of our classes to be full at this point. We have five total sections of preschool," said Winchell.
The program includes 53 four-year-olds registered and 46 three-year-olds.
Winchell says full-day preschool and childcare has become a very popular option for parents, especially those who work. This program is open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., with the structured preschool program running from 8-3:30. "We have a three-year-old section and a four-year-old section. Last year we went to a second section of this full-day option and it has been full since day one," said Winchell.
In addition to full-day, Community Ed still offers three sections of the traditional half- day preschool.
Community Ed also offers the Cannon Kids child care program. "We have 96 students registered for before school care and 51 students registered for after school care," said Winchell.
"Our numbers have continued to grow," said Winchell. "Our staff, some of whom have been here for over 15 years, claim these are our biggest numbers ever."
All the programs are in the Cannon Falls elementary building.
Scholarships are available for families who cannot afford to pay for the half-day preschool option, with the assistance of a grant through the United Way of Goodhue County.
"Each year, we grant more scholarship dollars than what the grant covers but we realize the importance of getting these children in school at an early age and we assist those families the best we can," said Winchell.
In addition to this, the full-day preschool options also qualify for County assistance, for those who meet their qualifications.
"I really think we are doing some great things in preschool," said Winchell. "We purchased a new curriculum this year that we have implemented and we have purchased iPad Minis that we are working to get integrated in the near future."
