Mural celebration event is this week

by Sue Sullivan

A capstone celebration of two murals painted from historic photographs commissioned by the Cannon Falls Historical Society, with a grant from the Southeast Minnesota Arts Council, will take place from Thursday, August 1, through Sunday, August 4.

The Mural Celebration Event will feature Vintage Bands, old fashioned pie and ice cream socials and stories about the community's past.

A napkin from 1892 which was signed by all who attended an event that year, is housed in the Cannon Falls Museum and became the impetus for the old fashioned ice cream socials to be featured at this week's event.

Adding to the celebration, the Vintage Band Festival performances in Cannon Falls will include from 7-8 p.m. the Newberry Victorian Cornet Band on Thursday, August 1, at the First Thursday Fun Fest, followed by an old fashioned ice cream social in the community parking lot south of the newly unveiled Harvest mural.

Friday, August 2, a concert by the Oktetten Ehnstedts Eftr from Stockholm Sweden (vintage town band) will be presented at 7 p.m. at St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church.

All day on Saturday, August 3, historic characters will be roving the downtown district beginning with the Chamber Appreciation Breakfast.

From 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, mini-programs will include visits by a Mark Twain impersonator, fiddle music, and story telling.

Mural artist Steve DeLaitsch and museum director Zach Wareham will give presentations at both sites: at the Old Mill Pond Mural just north of the Burkhardt Law Office, and at the Harvest Mural at the north end of the community parking lot near the rear entrance to Scofield Drug. Additionally, other period music will be performed.

Beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 4, a somber yet rousing Civil War Memorial Concert will be performed at the base of the Colvill Memorial in the Cannon Falls Cemetery. The concert will feature Civil War era music performed by the Vintage First Brigade Band dressed in authentic military band uniforms. Music will give way to a vintage pie and ice cream social with re-enactors.
