6/27/2013 2:56:00 PM Nelson helps test new Rapala lure
by Mike Dalton
Joel Nelson of Cannon Falls recently completed a 5-day test fishing trip to southern Canada and northern Minnesota.
Nelson is social media director for In-Depth Outdoors, which was hired by Rapala to promote a new lure, the Scatter-Rap. Nelson and five others spent five days fishing 100 miles of Lake of the Woods. The trip was taped for a TV show for Fox Sports North.
Nelson has been filming shows with In-Depth Outdoors for about five years, and has fished extensively at Lake of the Woods. That made him a perfect candidate to captain Team Black. The group as a whole caught over 1,000 fish, using only the Scatter-Rap lure.
Cabela's was a sponsor, so all the equipment used came from them. The group stayed at five different resorts, with a Lake of the Wood tourism group also a sponsor. "It was great to experience all the different resorts and use all the different equipment, but it wasn't so fun to have to pack up and move every night," Nelson said.
Since the Scatter-Rap Challenge was filmed for TV, the fishermen also had to contend with camera boats tracking their every move, Nelson said. "We fished last week, but the show is airing this week," he said. The TV show is a two-part series. The first part aired last Sunday on Fox Sports North, but is available for viewing on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XSnbgdhi3M). The second part of the series will air Sunday, June 30, following the Twins game on Fox Sports North.
Nelson said the group caught quite a few big walleye, the largest being a 29.75-inch, 9 1/2-pound walleye.
