Organizers have heard nothing but compliments following the Nature Grand Prix Bike Race time trial in Cannon Falls last Thursday.
In a wild finish, Sean Mazich of the Jelly Belly team grabbed a late lead and hung on to win the 93-mile road race. Jade Wilcoxson won the women's race, which was also a 93-mile trek through the Goodhue County countryside that culminated in a 4-lap sprint through the streets of Cannon Falls.
Neither of those two racers won the overall grand prix title. Wilcoxson crashed in the final corner of the final race, allowing Shelley Olds to capture the women's title. Mike Friedman won his first overall victory on American soil.
"We've received nothing but compliments from the steering committee," commented Pat Anderson, president of the local Chamber of Commerce. "They just love our wonderful volunteers and their 'can-do' spirit; we couldn't have pulled this off without them. The residents on the west side really enjoyed having the race on their side of town."
City administrator Aaron Reeves said there were a couple of complaints from semi drivers who thought Hwy. 20 was too narrow. "It seemed to go well from our end and it brought a lot of people into town, which is great," he said.
