"A once in a lifetime opportunity." That's how Greg Evans, regional president of Merchants Bank, described a community campaign for a new medical center in Cannon Falls. "We may never again in our lifetime see something that has such importance and reach in terms of the future of our community."
Merchants Bank and Greg and his wife Terri have made significant stretch contributions to Mayo Clinic Health System in Cannon Falls to supplement Mayo Clinic's $20 million commitment to build a new facility on the south side of the City off Highway 52.
Mayo Clinic Health System recently broke ground on the project which will be completed in late 2014. The final approval for the project came in February after years of planning and extensive support from community businesses like Merchants Bank and individuals like Greg and Terri Evans.
"We are a community bank, and part of our obligation and responsibility is to demonstrate leadership by supporting projects that build strong communities. I think three pillars of a strong community are quality education, a strong business community and access to quality health care," says Greg. "We have excellent schools, and Merchants is proud to be a part of the strong business community that makes Cannon Falls so attractive. This new medical facility is essential for us to prosper."
Evans believes that the partnership with Mayo Clinic is an unparalleled advantage for the area. The new clinic, hospital, emergency department and operating rooms in the new facility will allow Mayo Clinic Health System to expand services, improve privacy and add new technology. The facility will also better facilitate collaboration among care teams. Patients and visitors can expect an overall improved experience.
Merchants Bank is a full-service bank with 18 locations in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Its focus on local leadership gave the local Board of Directors and area management the power to decide on a significant stretch gift. Several members of the local board also support the campaign through individual gifts.
"Terri and I feel so strongly about this that we felt it was important to join the effort with a significant personal contribution in addition to leading the decision-making process with regard to our bank's gift," says Greg. "We committed a gift that stretches our budget, but we feel it's essential to the future of health care in Cannon Falls."
