The Cannon Falls High School Bombers Dance Team came away with a first place win in high kick and eighth place in jazz Saturday, February 16, during State competition held at the Target Center in Minneapolis.
Captains Emilee Lorentz and Brekkan Winchell and Assistant Alex Kehrberg were tired on Monday morning but still excited by the win. As Lorentz mentally recounted the daily practice hours, she came up with about 40 hours per week that the team put in beginning in September. "We would have dinner together and then practiced more," she said. "When you sign up for dance team, you pretty much have no life for six months."
"It was awesome," said Kehrberg.
Winchell explained, "What was really neat is that while we tied for third in 2011, we won with a whole rack point this year," as she explained the scoring system.
For 10 years straight, the girls said, the Bombers team has won first place at sections and this year they came in second. Some didn't think they could win State - and they scored a 37 point win.
"I'm really proud of our team. We had 12 rookies with four who had never danced on the team. There were only three seniors and three juniors," said Lorentz.
"We had a really young team this year," concluded Winchell.
