The Cannon Falls speech team headed to Farmington High School to compete against schools from central Minnesota up to the Twin Cities. A rarity, the team was split into varsity and novice squads. Out of 18 teams, the speechies took second to Prior Lake HS. En route to the team placing, three Cannon Falls speakers earned event wins on the weekend: Lily French in novice Humor, Sydney Erhardt in varsity Extemp Speaking and Hannah Brummund in varsity Storytelling.
Earning awards in the novice division were Brandon Stiles (Honorable Mention) in Creative Expression; Austin Quam (3rd) in Discussion; Jordynn Zier (6th) in Drama; Lily French and Matt Breuer (4th) in Duo; Emma Thomley (2nd) and Joe Granlund (7th) in Extemp Reading; Miranda Felton (2nd), Bjorn Pearson (4th) in Extemp Speaking; Matt Breuer (3rd) in Great Speeches; Graham Pearson (4th) and Luke LaMoore (HM) in Humor; Aleena Kearns (4th), Rianne Lund (6th) and Zach Katterjohn (7th) in Oratory; Paige Holt (7th) in Poetry; Quinn Sabin (7th) in Prose; and Samantha Hamann (5th) in Storytelling.
Rounding out the award winners in the varsity division were Cole Gardner (4th) and Cassie Dulek (5th) in Creative Expression; Madison Langdon (6th) in Discussion; Mary Franz (2nd) and Alexa Ochocki (4th) in Drama; Matt Lockett and Mary Franz (6th) in Duo; Alex Traynor (2nd) in Extemp Reading; Josh Siebenaler (3rd) in Extemp Speaking; Becca Gesme (2nd) in Great Speeches; Megan Bauer (5th) and Kailee Stiles (6th) in Informative; Shannon Phelps (HM) in Oratory; Matt Lockett (3rd) in Prose.
The younger speakers in grades 6-9 head to New Prague to compete against area junior high speakers this week before the whole team heads to Red Wing HS this Saturday.
