2/7/2013 8:46:00 PM CF speech returns with good experience
At the 2012 MSHSL State Speech Tournament, Cannon Falls had a record year with the most qualifiers (17) and most medalists (7) in Class A. As the team gears up for another season, only five of those state tournament speakers graduated last year.
Returning this season is a strong experienced group of speakers with eleven of the seventeen qualifiers returning to the team this year.
Medalists include Kailee Stiles (3rd,Oratory), Sydney Erhardt (3rd Extemp Speaking), Matt Lockett (5th, Poetry) and Becca Gesme (7th, Great Speeches). Qualifiers returning are Alex Traynor (Extemp Reading), Alexa Ochocki (Drama), Josh Siebenaler (Extemp Speaking), Madison Langdon (Discussion), Megan Bauer (Informative), Shannon Phelps (Oratory) and Hannah Brummund (Storytelling).
All are remaining in their events for this season except Matt who is making a move to Prose.
Composed of students grade 6-12, the total team is just over fifty team members strong who are preparing for our first tournament at Rochester Lourdes on the first Saturday in February. The team is very young again this year with a little under half of the team being novices, most of those in ninth grade or below. Every speaker on the team has been connected with a captain as a mentor to help negotiate the obligations of competing on a large, hard-working team.
The leadership structure of the team changed this year, allowing for more one-to-one help of the younger team members. Eight speakers were named captain for the season: Alex Traynor, Alexa Ochocki, Cassandra Dulek, Josh Siebenaler, Kailee Stiles, Sydney Erhardt, Megan Bauer and Matt Lockett.
In addition to a weekly coach practice, students have a weekly individual practice with a captain to get done all of the work that's needed to compete,.
The dedication of our student leaders to coach their younger teammates has been a big reason for the team's increased success the last few seasons.
