First baby of the year announced

by Sue Sullivan

The first baby born in 2013 in the Cannon Falls trade area is Preston David Puppe. Born at 11:27 a.m. on Tuesday, January 8, 2013, at Mayo Health System-Red Wing Preston weighed seven pounds, 14 ounces and was 19-1/2 inches long.

Preston is the son of Samantha Schwarting and David Puppe of Goodhue, and new brother to Briahna Barlow, his nine-year-old sister, and one and one-half year old sister Payton Puppe.

Grandpa Gerald Puppe was listening to the radio when the First Baby of the Year Contest was announced. He called David who notified the Beacon.

"We thought it was super neat that our son was the first baby of 2013 in our area and how lucky we were to win since it seems we never win," said Samantha with a laugh.

Briahna is "smitten" with the new addition to the family explained her mother. She calls him "L'il Dave" because of his striking resemblance to his dad.

Payton is a little hesitant to have him take her place as the baby of the family. As a new big sister, she holds Preston's bottle for him and helps keep his pacifier in place. Sounding the alert, "baby!" each time Preston moves or cries, Payton lavishes kisses on her baby brother.

Samantha and David are dairy farmers. Samantha also works as a certified Nursing Assistant in Red Wing. After a few weeks she'll return to work.

When Samantha got up at 5:30 a.m. January 8, a day past her due date, she knew she was in labor. Dave usually milks the cows at 7 a.m. so the couple thought they'd have the baby first and then milk. Dave was late that day but the cows waited patiently.

Six hours after what Samantha called "an easy labor" had begun, little Preston was placed in his mother's waiting arms. Though they knew the baby would be a boy, they were overjoyed to have their last child a boy who would carry on the family name.

While grandparents Karen and Gerald Puppe of Goodhue, are happy to have their seventh grandchild, grandparents Todd and Tracy Hinrichs of Dodge Center were very excited to have a grandson. Grandpa Todd has been surrounded by girls for years with three daughters and two granddaughters before Preston. Now he'll have some male company.

"He is a very good sleeper," said his mom. "Preston has gained two pounds in only two weeks and he only cries when he's hungry. He looks around now and I think he's beginning to recognize people. He's wonderful. I could have asked for nothing better!" she exclaimed.

"Having three children has spread us a bit thinner these days. Briahna is quite independent but Payton and the new baby are a balancing act. With double diaper changings and tending to their needs all at once it takes patience and forming a routine. Giving each one-on-one time reminds them they are equally special to us," concluded Samantha.

Local merchants have many and varied gifts awaiting baby Preston and his family.

The contest is sponsored by the Cannon Falls Beacon and Mayo Clinic Health System-Cannon Falls.
