The Cannon River STEM School (science, technology engineering, and mathematics) was recently approved as a public K-6 charter school. The school (CRSS) will be sponsored by Audubon Center of the North Woods, a learning center located about 90 miles from Duluth.
"STEM is the primary academic focus of the school and very important for the future of our greater community," commended Gary Engstrom, a board member for the school. "This is very exciting and should prove to be a great asset to the Northfield, Cannon Falls, Randolph communities and beyond."
The instructional approach of the school will be a multidisciplinary, project-based approach, focused on the natural and cultural environments of the school setting on the Maltby Nature Preserve near Randolph.
Last week, four members of the CRSS board attended a two-day training session (August 26-27) provided by the Minnesota State Department of Education. This training will continue with monthly sessions to be held during the next few months.
"This training will prepare the board of directors for the proper governance of the charter school," Engstrom said.
Generally, the next steps in the process include securing a federal planning grant, hiring an executive director, selecting an instructional site, planning and developing a curriculum, hiring teachers, and recruiting students, with the goal of being open for business for the fall of 2009.
As the board proceeds through these steps, they will keep their web site up to date, which is at: http:cannonriver stem school.org/crss/. The public can also contact the board via email at: crss@live.com
The next board meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 10, 6:30-8:30 p.m., at the Just Foods event room in Northfield
