During Fire Prevention Week, Cannon Falls Volunteer firefighters were busy educating children about safety and fire prevention.
Three ECFE classes toured the Cannon Falls fire hall. While there, they were shown what a firefighter looks and sounds like when they're all suited up and have on their air masks (SCBA).
"This can be frightening to children because they can't see your face," volunteer firefighter Greg Hepola said. "We also teach them not to hide and other safety rules if there is a fire in their home.
"We talked about exit drills and having a meeting spot outside the home. This is a big thing. And we plant in their heads to get out and stay out."
They also stressed the importance of staying low under smoke, and demonstrated "stop drop and roll."
The firemen went to St. Mary's School on Oct. 11 when it snowed. So they gave a presentation in one of the classrooms, talking about fire alarms, fire extinguishers, and safety in the kitchen. Then they had the kids bundle up and go outside to see the three fire trucks and have a question and answer time.
Five firefighters and three EMTs went to Cannon Falls Elementary on Oct. 18. They gave a 15-minute presentation in the gym for K-3 classes, and then students went outside to see the fire trucks and ambulance. That same day, they went to St. Paul's Elementary School so students there could tour the trucks and ask questions.
They also gave out work books, coloring books, and calendars related to fire prevention and safety, and general safety.
